Review of Toby, Toby, Worry Free by Lucinda Grapenthin, PhD

When Toby is faced with learning to ride his bike so he can play with his friends, he begins to worry and worry and worry.

"What if I fall?" "What if other kids laugh at me?" "What if I can't ride my bike?!"

Mommy pauses, attuning to his behavior. She accepts his emotions and calmly engages with him, encouraging his discovery of positive steps to solve this dilemma.

Toby learns a better way to manage his feelings by using his can do thoughts. Now, he can have fun!

(affiliate links included)

**My thoughts**
I can vividly remember feeling the same was as Toby when I was a child. All of the other children had learned to ride their bikes well before I did because I didn't have a good place to learn how to ride. I was afraid of what they would think of me and would try to find ways to avoid riding. I like the description of how Toby gets all tangled and tense with his anxiety. I think children will be able to relate to that.

There has been a push lately to teach children positive affirmations and a "can do" attitude, which is what they try so hard to do with Toby learning how to ride his bike. Children reading this are going to have the chance to review this concept and try to apply it to their own life in whatever is worrying them.

Just as important as helping children remember their "can do" attitude is how this book teaches parents and caregivers a productive way to work with children who are feeling a lot of anxiety. You'll notice that Toby's parents acknowledge how he is feeling. Instead of telling him to not worry, they instead focus on what TO DO to lessen his anxiety. You wouldn't think that makes a big difference, but it truly does. You'll also notice that his mom scaffolds him to riding independently. This means she breaks down the task of riding his bike long distances into several smaller steps that he can more easily manage and lets him master those smaller ones before moving on to the next one. This is also really important when helping children work through anxiety and mastering new skills.

And finally, at the end, the author provides more information for parents who are dealing with challenging behavior in their child via the PAUSE Approach.

This one would work in the classroom to read as a group, but would be more beneficial in a one-on-one setting, I think. Read it over and over again while helping a child work through whatever the difficult situation is.

I received a requested copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Review of Andy Gets Angry by Mike Masse, Painted by Emily Corbett

I'm so glad to see more and more resources available to help children with their social-emotional learning. It's been needed as long as I have been involved in the education/childcare profession and it feels needed more now than ever. Mike Masse has put together the words and Emily Corbett has painted the illustrations in their book Andy Gets Angry. Take a peek inside and read more of my thoughts. Follow the tour to see even more. Best of luck in the giveaway!

Children can develop the ability to respond to their emotions in a healthy way through the practice of mindfulness. Andy Gets Angry is a great introduction for children to learn a fun and simple breath technique to respond to their emotions. The beautifully hand-painted illustrations provide the perfect landscape to tell the story of Andy and his journey in learning the wonderful skill of mindfulness. Share the book with your loved ones, and help us all plant the seed to be present!

Read an excerpt:
Andy doesn’t like being angry, mad, or frustrated – he hates how it makes him feel. Sometimes he feels angry in his face. Sometimes he feels angry in his hands. Other times, he feels angry in his stomach and even in his mind.

Andy later feels bad about some of the things he said or did when he was angry. He felt bad after he yelled at Bobby, and he felt bad after he slammed the door on Sierra… and he felt bad after the one time he told his dad that he didn’t like him anymore. And that didn’t just make Andy angry. It also made him feel sad.

**My thoughts**
It's hard enough for adults when we aren't sure how to handle our anger or strong feelings. It's even worse for young children. We need to give them as many tools as we can and present appropriate ways of handling those big feelings. This book is a good way to start.

Andy gets angry, and understandably so with some of his life's frustrations. And then when those feelings have calmed down, he feels bad about it. Kids reading this book will probably recognize some of those frustrating situations and those feelings. So the adults in his life decide to help him by taking him to see Mindful Mike, who teaches him breathing techniques to help him calm down when feeling angry or frustrated.

Stress breathing techniques really do work wonders with children. They're not going to stop being angry, but they may be able to better control those feelings when they rear their ugly heads. Mike presents them in a creative way that will speak to children. And the paintings by Emily Corbett are bright and lively enough to grab attention and seem familiar.

I would read this with the whole class on occasion and then use it more one-on-one with a child who is feeling particularly frustrated. It would also be a good book to leave out in the reading and/or peace area of the classroom as a reference for kids to go back to on their own. It's long enough that it will probably speak to kindergarten and elementary-age students more than preschoolers. But even preschoolers can benefit from learning these breathing techniques. You could adapt it to fit the audience, if needed. I would definitely add this to my mindfulness arsenal.

Thank you to Goddess Fish and Tellwell Publishing for providing a requested review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

And the dreams that I dream are as big as the sea.
This is what it means to be me.

**My thoughts**
Right off the bat, you feel empowered by looking at the cover. This young girl is just oozing self-confidence and self-love and it is beautiful to see. The illustrations of the other children throughout the rest of the book also exude happiness and joy.

The first page of the story is a little long, but is just an introduction that serves as sort of the start of a conversation with the child. The meat of the book has simpler text that is easier to read and digest and is printed on a background of peaceful colors and stars, again radiating happiness.

It is a little on the long side but doesn't have to be read all in one sitting at first. It's a story that can be revisited time and time again and can inspire children to define themselves on different levels. I would love to use this in my classroom or with other young children in my life.

Thank you to the publishing company and Goddess Fish for sending me a requested review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Review of I Want to Be ... A Gutsy Girl's ABC by Farida Zaman

Some jobs immediately sound fun―Candy Maker anyone?! And some jobs sound exciting―Oceanographer, Sportscaster, Aerialist! And some jobs―Kite Designer, Wind Farmer, Party Planner―sound so wonderful it’s hard to believe that they exist! Babies and toddlers will follow along with this ABC as it explores some of the amazing, and often unusual, jobs that people do. Each fun letter is complemented by an illustration of a girl filled with delight and wonder as she shows us how we can be, quite literally, anything we want to be.

**My thoughts**
I liked this book much more than I thought I would. When I was growing up, I went to Montessori where we were taught "You Can Be What You Want to Be," which was also the title of a play and song about Maria Montessori. And this book really echoes that idea. Each letter of the alphabet gets its own page with a potential occupation and one sentence describing what that job would be. They're all fun possibilities and definitely think outside of the box. And in the illustrations, she included different races and ethnicities as well as differently abled people. It's subtly obvious. And fear not, boys, you will be inspired by this book as well.

Brown Bear Won't Share by RW Culpepper

Teaching Kids to Share and Show Kindness

Brown Bear awoke from hibernation to the tempting scent of pears in the air. It was spring, and the forest was buzzing with life. He could see Owl, Rabbit, Squirrel, and three little mice.

“Good morning, all,” said Brown Bear. “I'm on my way to pick some delicious sweet pears, ten, twenty, thirty if I dare. I will eat them all without care.”

“That wouldn't be wise,” said Owl. “Your belly could turn sour and pass gas that is foul. Instead of eating them all without care, do the right thing, and share.”

BROWN BEAR WON’T SHARE
is a book about a selfish, greedy bear. Brown Bear is so selfish and greedy he won’t even share with his friends. Now that’s one selfish bear. Brown Bear soon realizes that he needs his friends and being unkind to them is not the way to go.

A Note From The Author

Thank you for your support! I hope you enjoyed reading "BROWN BEAR WON’T SHARE." Writing and illustrating children's picture books are super fun for me, especially those that teach moral lessons and help build a kid's self-esteem. I hope that my books will increase a child's love for reading, listening, and storytelling, allowing parents and children to spend quality time together. Your opinions, thoughts, and suggestions are always much appreciated.

Ripple the dolphin just moved to a new aquarium and is excited to make some friends! But as she swims around, she notices the water is still and quiet. The eels have no zing. The neon fishes don't glow. The seahorses aren't horsing around. Everyone's too afraid of a mean shark named Snark!

**My thoughts**
We all have some sharks in our lives. You know, those people who always seem to be cranky and no one wants to be around them. Little do a lot of us realize that if we try to spread happiness with those sharks anyway, we could quite possibly make them turn around and be less cranky. That's the message of this story in a nutshell.

Ripple is a dolphin who has just moved to a new aquarium. She kind of reminds me of Pollyanna in her desire to meet new friends and to share the happiness. She makes a conscious choice to be happy and attempts to teach this to the other creatures in the aquarium through a fun game of smiling. You'll actually find this game familiar, as it is a regular favorite to play with kids to get them to smile. It even works on Snark the Shark.

I love the idea of this story, spreading joy and happiness, even to those who seem to be cranky. Sometimes those cranky people just need to be acknowledged! I can see kids playing this game like crazy with each other after reading this book. The authors also provide other activities that kids can do to be happy and to develop a happiness mindset. These exercises are more for the older kids who may be reading this story, though I think the picture book itself could be read to even younger children.

I adore the illustrations in this book. You actually cannot help but smile as you look at Ripple and the other sea creatures. This book could probably also be used for identifying the different sea creatures if you are studying that in your classroom.

My only real criticism of the book is that the print seems a bit too small in the advance review copy that I read. It's especially noticeable on those pages that only have about a line of print. I know we want to emphasize the happiness in the story via the pictures, but the print is just as important!

Overall, I gave this book four stars. It would be a fun addition to both the classroom and home libraries.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for my advance review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
