Review of Hoppin' Hankaroo by Janet Earnest Jenkins

Join Kathy and Hankaroo on their trip to the zoo where they meet some silly animals and make a new friend who is the funniest bird they've ever seen! Appropriate for ages 0-6 years, Hoppin' Hankaroo is a rhyming book, which makes it easier for little ones to remember the words. The illustrations are done in crayon as if a child colored them. A great learning tool and fun story, your child will want to read this humorous picture book again and again!

Goodreads * Kindle * Paperback * Hardcover

(affiliate links included)

**My thoughts**

This is a cute story about a little girl going to the zoo with her dog to see all of the animals and have some adventures. There's a bit of a mix of what you would actually expect to see at the zoo and then some playful imaginary happenings. All of it is told in rhyme, which is actually fun to read out loud. The end of the story hints at future titles continuing the adventures of Kathy with a K.

As described in the book blurb, the illustrations are done in crayon and look like an older child has drawn them. I am personally not a fan of this style of illustration, but I know it speaks to some readers. I think this is the kind of book that could inspire children to create their own books and made-up adventures. I get the impression it was created because of a child's idea. Kudos to this grandmother for fulfilling that dream!

Review of Pups on the Run! by Hannah Hurdle, illustrated by Marissa Pruett

When Hazel and Kaya discover the open gate, they are ready for an adventure. They wander, and tumble, and play all day. As the sun begins to go down, the pups head home.

But which way is home? They soon realize they are lost. And it's getting darker, and scarier!

Finally, they begin to recognize sights and smells and sounds. The tired pups retrace their steps and find their way home.

(affiliate link included)

**My thoughts**
This is a cute story about two pups who go off on an adventure, lose track of time, and then get lost trying to find their way home. Of course, they persevere and figure out how to get home, much to the delight of their young owner, and make plans to do it all over again tomorrow. It's the kind of story that has a classic feel to it.

Because I was getting that classic story vibe, I was a bit thrown off by the illustrations. They're quite vibrant and intense. Reading the illustrator bio at the end, I guess she is a comic illustrator, and I can definitely see that influence in these pictures. It's not my favorite type of illustration for picture books, but I know others quite enjoy it.

This would be a fun addition to a classroom or home library to enjoy again and again.

I received a requested review copy via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Cardinal Fun Facts: Fun Facts on Birds for Kids by Michelle Hawkins

Do you know that Cardinals are the only bird with a crest in the United States?

And do you know that every little habit of this little bird can become a story to tell?

It is sometimes difficult to make our children understand the beauty of nature, to make them appreciate the small things, the beauty of a flower, the freshness of the air, the scent of grass. Many times we are not fortunate to be in contact with nature, far from a meadow, closed in the cities, but so often while being able to look out from our balcony in a beautiful country house, we know how to observe but do not appreciate the beauty of creation.

Know the details and habits of a bird as common as it is surprising, through a simple path and that fuels the interest and curiosity of your child. That's the purpose of this book.

But beware, prepare for the challenge!

You will have to be able to answer the questions that your child will ask you by showing off their deep knowledge in the microworld of the Cardinals:

•Mom, do you know the states where the Cardinal is the state bird? I do!
•Hey dad, do you know if both male and female Cardinals sing? I do!
•Grandpa, do you know how much a Cardinals weighs? I do!
•Grandma, do you know how many eggs Cardinals lay in their nest? I do!
•Sarah, you're my big sister and you've studied a lot, but I bet you don't know the Cardinals favorite seed! I know that.

You don't need anything else, just one click on "Buy Now" and you will let your child live a magical new adventure with his new friend Cardinals and the magic natural world of songbirds.

Review of Play Like an Animal! by Maria Gianferrari

Dash! Hide! Splash! Ride! Exuberant text celebrates all the different ways animals play, from rhinos taking mud baths and parrots somersaulting through the air to kangaroos boxing and dolphins diving through the surf. Additional text explains how playing benefits animals. Fascinating back matter gives more information about the featured animals in the book and encourages readers to make time to play every day!

Book Links

**My thoughts**
Whimsical words introduce how animals in the wild like to have fun while they're playing, just like kids like to play, too! This book is a fun ride around the world that introduces the child to all kinds of fun vocabulary, whether action words and adverbs or different kinds of animals that you don't traditionally find in children's books. I even learned about a few more. The illustrations are also really cute and attractive to kids. I like how there's also a little box that gives a bit more of a serious explanation about the animals' behavior in some cases. If you really want to know more, there's a lot more information in the back. It's really a lot of fun to read out loud and would be a fun addition to a classroom library.

**My thoughts**
If you love Westies, you're probably going to love this book. These dogs definitely have their own personalities and dedicated fans. And this was a sweet story of one who finds his way out of his own yard and finds a whole new world to explore. Along the way, he meets many new animal friends and even gets his human to go along with him to help him navigate his new friendships.

The illustrations appear to be hand-drawn, which is something you don't see as much of anymore. They were also sweet.

Review of McDuff Moves In by Rosemary Wells

“A homeless unloved pup becomes one lucky dog in this tender picture book. . .”
―starred Publishers Weekly Review

The Gryphon Press is delighted to bring this classic children’s picture back into print for a new generation of children.

McDuff Moves In has been loved for its heartwarming and lively story and its magical recreation of a simpler era. Readers have commented that they loved reading McDuff’s story to their children, and, in due course, to their grandchildren, reading the book over and over, until, as one reader wrote, the “original copy was worn to shreds.”

“This collaboration by Wells and Jeffers is as sweet, substantial, and comforting as that bowl of rice pudding and will suit the many children who like stories with simple words, clear story lines, and happily-ever-after endings. ”
– Booklist

No one wanted the nameless little dog wandering the streets looking unsuccessfully for food and shelter until kindhearted Fred and Lucy, a young couple, take him inside. After they feed him rice pudding and bathe him, they realize that they cannot bear to return him to the pound. Newly adopted, McDuff–named that night for their favorite shortbread biscuit–is last seen happily asleep on his back on a pillow next to Fred and Lucy’s bed.

Wells knows just the right words to describe McDuff's emotions in ways that little readers will identify with and understand. She describes his joy in being accepted with these words: ''No one had ever asked him to come in. Everyone had always told him to go away.''

Jeffers's illustrations brilliantly capture a bygone art deco America in Lucy and Fred’s cozy home, a virtual-reality nostalgia unfaded. Dog lovers everywhere will recognize the very specific details that bring McDuff to life, from the familiar lift of a paw in the rain to the frightened eyes peeking out over the car dashboard.

**My thoughts**
I remember enjoying books by Rosemary Wells when I was a child, and even shared some early on in my teaching career. I was delighted to see one making a comeback of sorts.

In this one, the poor dog manages to escape from the dogcatcher's truck and seeks a new home. He finds a couple willing to take him in, who at first think that they just do not have time to devote to taking care of a dog. But then they realize that they just cannot let him go to the dog pound and end up adopting and giving him a name. A sad start gets a happy ending.

I loved the feeling of somewhat going back in time to the 1930s, when life seemed a little simpler and less chaotic than it is now. In spite of this nostalgia, this book still holds a timeless quality about it that you do not find as much in current literature.

It really pulls at your heartstrings as you go through the range of emotions right with the dog. And the illustrations are truly darling. It makes me want to get out all of my other Rosemary Wells books and revisit them.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for fulfilling my request to review this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Shell

Turtle’s friends Bear, Fox, and Rabbit all have brand new backpacks, and Turtle’s shell just doesn’t seem as cool...after all, it’s not made of shiny red plastic! But Turtle learns that what makes his shell unique makes it just as cool.

The Race

Review of The Chalk Giraffe by Kirsty Paxton

The Chalk Giraffe

A little girl's imagination springs to life when the chalk giraffe she drew on the pavement begins talking to her. But then the fickle giraffe begins making demands, and the girl must draw surroundings to fulfill his requests...a tree, soft grass, and animal friends. But nothing seems to please him! This delightful rhyming story escalates until the girl draws a laughing giraffe companion that cheers up the grumpy giraffe at last.

Book Links

**My thoughts**
From the very first picture of the little girl laying on the pavement, tongue sticking out as she concentrated on her drawing, I was captivated by the illustrations. That first image was just so endearing, especially to this former teacher of the young. The rest of the pictures truly conveyed the excitement and the heart with which the young girl is telling her story. It made me want to grab some chalk and go outside to see what kind of a world I could create as well.

The rhyming story flows nicely off the tongue, making it a great read-aloud. It captures the little girl's excitement as she creates the new world for the giraffe, her frustration with his crankiness, and then her awe as she takes a look at the world from his perspective.

And I love how the giraffe invites her to climb up to see what he sees in the world and how she is able to acknowledge the other point of view. That part could easily lend itself to a great discussion with kids. And of course, make sure there is plenty of chalk available for outside pavement drawing as well as chalk and black paper inside for more creative expression!

This one is a must-have for the school and home library!

Inky the Octopus

I must explore the open sea!

Follow Inky the octopus as he escapes from the National Aquarium of New Zealand to the ocean! Based on a true story, Inky the Octopus: Bound for Glory chronicles the adventure that the real-life Inky might have taken on his escape to freedom in the open ocean!

Book Links

**My thoughts**
This fun rhyming story is about an octopus named Inky who has been enjoying his life in his tank, but now aches to see more of the world And somehow, he manages to escape and venture out into the world. It's based on a true story and also includes some other fun, true, and crazy octopus antics.

The bulk of it is full of fun octopus trivia, making it a fun research tool for older kids. The first part, which is the picture book part, is fun for younger kids to read. Adjust your presentation of it accordingly depending on the age and level of children's you're sharing it with. Let them explore it on their own to get out of it what they can at their own level.
