Review of The Magic of Daydreaming by Kyra Kalweit and Dayán Mantecón Roldán

We keep hearing about manifesting our desires as adults. Here's a book that essentially teaches kids the same idea. Take a peek inside The Magic of Daydreaming by Kyra Kalweit and Dayán Mantecón Roldán and read my thoughts on the book before you download your copy. Also check out the rest of the tour for more chances to win in the giveaway!

Mona is a small, purple, furry creature with a BIG dream. What is her dream? To one day fly high in the sky and enjoy the magnificent view from above. But how will she do it?

We invite you to spread your wings by following along on Mona's adventure in discovering how to make your dreams come true.

Are you ready for the magic?

Read an excerpt:
“It is the practice of daydreaming. You need to find a quiet place and sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes, and imagine what you want as though it’s here and it’s yours. Imagine it until you can feel it and believe that it has already happened.”

**My thoughts**
First I have to say that Mona is super cute and I love her glasses! And so are the other creatures she encounters on her quest to learn how to fly.

But it bothers me immensely that Mona is drawn throughout the book with 8 legs. She should only have 6 as a caterpillar and as a butterfly. I know this is fiction, but the teacher in me still wants animals depicted somewhat correctly. I noticed the 8 legs right off the bat and first thought maybe she was a spider, until I got to the metamorphosis. And then she still had 8 legs. Kids can internalize that visually and some may question it.

I appreciate the message of this story: if you can dream it, you can do it. It's a popular idea right now in the adult world and is filtering down to the kid world as well. And this is a cute way to get that across.

I will admit that a little voice inside my head read quite deeply into the story and started a debate about free will vs. predetermination with it, as she is likely still going to become a butterfly. There are some deeply philosophical early elementary age kids I have known who would pick up on that. However, it could lead to some interesting discussions.

And for fun, you could even have older children read this as a short story to discuss that very concept. I could see it becoming a religious or philosophical discussion. I totally would have done that back then.

But back to the intended age group. I would say some 4's would get into this, but definitely 5 and above. And you could use it as a launchpad for starting to set goals and then figuring out the steps to achieve them. Again, if you can dream it, you can do it.

Now, did I mention how stinking cute these illustrations are?

I received a requested review copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
