Ezra Jack Keats is one of those children's book authors whose works should be present in every classroom and every library. His stories were simple, yet captured the lives of so many children. Children can relate to the characters in his books. What made him more unique for his time was that he was the first one to really incorporate multiculturalism into his stories. He also took the child out of the traditional rural or suburban setting and took a peek into the urban world, as well.
Keats won the Caldecott medal for his book
The Snowy Day. He also was honored by Caldecott for his illustrations in
Whistle for Willie. His illustrations were unique at the time, because he used collage instead of straight up drawing.
All together, Keats wrote and illustrated over 20 of his own books. He illustrated more than that for other people.
