Review of Patroosh, the Cheeky Pelican by Renee James

I love children's books that can sneak in some lessons while also being fun to read aloud. Read an excerpt from and my review of Patroosh, the Cheeky Pelican by Renee James. Follow the tour for even more thoughts. Best of luck in the giveaway!

Patroosh is a cheeky pelican who always wants more. He'll even take the food right out of your hand, or flap his big wings until you drop it in the sand. But after an unexpected event, and a random act of kindness, this pelican's life is about to change forever.

Read an excerpt:

The pelicans are fast, especially Patroosh. “What about me, you big greedy bird?” Seamus, the little seagull, really wanted to be heard.

Seamus was starving and his tummy was rumbling.

RUMBLE RUMBLE

Patroosh was so full up that his tummy was grumbling.

GRUMBLE GRUMBLE

He floated around with his belly up, sunbathing, gloating, and singing, “YUP YUP YUP YUUUUUP.”

**My thoughts**
This book was a fun one to read. First I have to say that I love the name Patroosh. It makes me think of the little girl in the movie Chocolat and her imaginary friend. And I have always loved the word cheeky.

The pictures are vibrant and I love the expressions on Patroosh's face. It reads aloud rather well, though occasionally I got a little tripped up when alternating between rhyming and non-rhyming parts. But knowing that this is one to be read aloud more than once, it will be easy to get over that.

It provides a great foundation for a couple of important conversations. One is about bullying and being mean to other kids, as Patroosh is to the other birds and even humans. One is about trying to be kind to others, as the little bird Seamus is. And of course, there's a great lesson here about littering and trash and taking care of our environment. I think this is a book that can get a lot of mileage in a classroom and is also one that kids will enjoy at home.

I received a requested review copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Buzzin’ with Kindness

Publisher: Xlibris

The story is about ten bees bullying one another while flying around in Mrs. Busy's classroom. The ten bees are buzzing very loud, shouting at one another, crashing into one another, pushing, shoving, trying to sting the children, and flying around the classroom while Mrs. Busy is teaching. These are not acceptable behaviors. The bees are being rude and are trying to bully one another. All of a sudden, the bees decide being bullies is wrong. Being bullies to one another is not the correct thing to do. The bees decide to be kind, use kind language to one another, use good manners, be polite, and set a good example for the children. Being bullies set a bad example for the children. Mrs. Busy tells the children to behave nicely to one another. She tells the children they should not push, hurt, shove, or bully one another. They need to be thoughtful, kind, and say Excuse me or Im sorry. Being a bully is not the correct behavior either in school or outside of school or anywhere. Mrs. Busy tells the children to do their best in school and play together nicely as bullying hurts the feelings of others. Mrs. Busy lets the children know they should use only kind words and their indoor voices, they should be good listeners, and they should not punch, kick, shove, hit, spit, and grab one another. Bullying hurts others. The ten bees were wrong to hurt one another. No bullying! Bullying others is not an acceptable behavior. Bullying hurts!

'Veggie's Bully' by C. JoVan Williams

Veggie's BullyVeggie's Bully

A Book Encouraging Self Esteem for Readers Young and Old

A book inspiring lessons about self love, Veggie Bunnie learns something that all readers need to know.... Love yourself, no matter what others may say! Filled with colorful illustrations, this book follows Veggie's relationship with her friends Carb Monkey and his Uncle Bear. Throughout the book, 'Carb' wants to get even with the bully that is bothering Veggie, whereas 'Uncle Bear' wants her to take a different approach. This book encourages readers to be the best person they can be, regardless of how people may act around them.

**My thoughts**

A frequent discussion these days between my fellow teachers and I is how disrespectful children are becoming, and how mean they specifically are to each other. The problem is happening at younger and younger ages, especially in the springtime, I think. Not only are they being mean to each other, but also seeking revenge instead of handling the situation in a positive way.

The conversations being had in these book happen on a daily basis in our schools and homes. One child's feelings are being hurt. Another child wants to extract revenge by giving the bully a taste of his own medicine. I just hope that all children have someone as wonderful as Uncle Bear, who guides them along a more appropriate path. He emphasizes how wonderful Veggie actually is and how seeking retaliation merely makes you as bad as the bully. It never solves the problem. Instead, you need to look to yourself to be the bigger person and to focus on what makes you unique and special and wonderful.

Uncle Bear also acknowledges the anger and frustration that Veggie is feeling. It is important to help a child learn how to label her feelings, and why she is feeling that way, so that she can better understand them.

This book is also easy to read through its rhyming verse. Complemented by vibrant pictures, it is going to be attractive to young children. This is one I would like to use in my classroom as a part of our peace curriculum. I am also interested in seeing more of the series.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Honey the Hero
Honey, an inquisitive young parakeet living in the Australian Outback, decides to become a superhero after she spies a human family watching Superman. Since she already has the power of flight, all she needs to do is create a costume to conceal her true identity and then fly off in search of animals that need rescuing.
Unfortunately, every time she tries to help, Honey only ends up making matters worse. She spoils Kangaroo’s game of hide-and-go-seek by revealing his hiding place to Wallaby; Mr. Anteater must go hungry when she alerts the ants to his presence, and Mrs. Koala is made a laughingstock among bears when Honey pretends to be her Joey. Finally realizing that she’s not as heroic as she’d like, Honey gives up her day-saving efforts.
But what happens when someone actually needs Honey’s help? Will she rise to the challenge?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Davey the Detective

Davey dubs himself the luckiest crow in the entire world when he finds a wonderful, shiny object. It even has a fantastic name: “paperclip.” Wow!

One dark and dreary day, Davey’s treasure goes missing, and he is beside himself with grief. Luckily, he knows just how he can find out which of the forest animals is to blame for the theft. Inspired by the torn pages of a Sherlock Holmes story that were used to fashion his nest, Davey calls on the help of Sarah the sparrow to investigate the mystery and, hopefully, retrieve his prize.

Together the two birds begin to collect clues. Their trail leads them straight to Mr. Bushtail, a greedy squirrel who keeps a giant store of objects in a hollowed-out tree trunk. When Mr. Bushtail refuses to cooperate, the two birds have no choice but to break into his tree house in search of the truth.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Justice will prevail and treasure will be found in this intriguing tale of mystery.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Poppy the Proud

Poppy is the prettiest peacock in the entire garden, but one day his privileged existence is upset when an all-white peacock is born and promptly named the most beautiful by a smitten flock. Intensely jealous, Poppy no longer knows where he fits in and decides to reclaim his title as the fairest bird in all the land, no matter what it takes.

In a desperate attempt to regain the admiration of his peers, Poppy steals items from the humans that visit his park. He wraps himself in a beautiful silk scarf, wears a series of ornate bangles around his neck, and even tries to dye his feathers with colored dust from a festive Holi celebration. Unfortunately, each of these attempts not only fails to improve his appearance, they actually make it worse. What’s a poor bird to do?

In this compelling tale of self-esteem, pride, and learning what makes each of us special, Poppy the peacock discovers that true beauty lies beneath the feathers.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tommy goes Trick-or-Treating
Tommy is a mischievous little woodpecker who loves to fly to the edge of the forest and watch the people in the nearby suburb. One evening, something strange and exciting happens—people emerge from their houses wearing costumes and carrying colorful buckets with smiling faces on them. What’s even crazier is that they shout a special codeword while standing outside of each house, and are given delicious-looking candy.
Tommy simply must join in the fun. He and his friend, Michael the raccoon, fashion their own costumes and head off to join in the festivities. Thanks to Tommy’s knock-knocking beak and Michael’s quick paws, the duo is able to heist many a candy bar from the unsuspecting homeowners and children.
But are they missing out on the true spirit of Halloween?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Courtney Saves Christmas

Courtney is a peppy young penguin who just loves exploring, and is overjoyed when she receives a compass from Santa on Christmas morning. She’s so grateful for the gift, in fact, that she just needs to give Santa a great big hug and say “Thank you!” in person. The only problem is she lives in the South Pole, and Santa is all the way on the other side of the globe!

With the aid of her new compass, Courtney sets off on a journey that takes her almost an entire year. By the time she reaches Santa’s workshop, the elves are in a flurry preparing for the upcoming holiday. Unfortunately, Rudolph is feeling very sick—too sick to guide the sleigh. If Courtney can’t find a way to help, Christmas will be ruined and all the children of the world will be devastated. What’s a little penguin to do?

**My thoughts**

I have been enjoying reading the Bird Brain series by Emlyn Chand. Each one stars a different type of bird, who is excited about something, just like a little kid would be. Perhaps it is Halloween or Christmas. Maybe it is a paperclip. Whatever excites the bird, is something that a kid could relate to.

Each of the birds ends up learning a valuable life lesson in his or her adventures. They learn how to be good friends and helpers to those in need. They learn important skills to help boost their self-esteem. Each one of these books easily lends itself to one-on-one conversations for parents to have with their children, or for teachers to have with their students. This series is only just getting started. More adventures and life lessons are yet to come!

These books will appeal to children ages 4 and up. I have read them with children ages 4-6 in a school setting and even older in a home setting. The children all seem to enjoy the stories, as well as the illustrations.

Kids Books A to Z: C is for Chester Raccoon

Chester Raccoon is the adorable character created by Audrey Penn. You probably know him best as the little raccoon who missed his mommy when he went to school. So, she gave him a special way to think of her during the day as she gave him The Kissing Hand. Mommies all over use this technique with their young ones.

Chester has even more stories for young readers, though. The first sequel that stars our beloved raccoon is A Pocket Full of Kisses. Chester now has to share his mommy with his little brother. He is afraid that she won't have enough Kissing Hands to share with both of her boys.

In A Kiss Goodbye, Chester has to learn how to say goodbye to the only home he has ever known when his family decides to move.

Chester learns how to say goodbye to one of his good friends in Chester Raccoon and an Acorn Full of Memories. This book was written to help children who must attend a funeral.

Chester Raccoon and the Big Bad Bully teaches kids that those who pick on you the most are probably the most in need of some loving attention. Mama Raccoon weaves a magical tale that teaches Chester and his friends how to deal with the bully at school.

A Kissing Hand is also the perfect thing to calm a little raccoon who is scared of the dark and is having nightmares. Calm children's fears by reading A Bedtime Kiss for Chester Raccoon.

And finally, children can go on a color scavenger hunt with Chester Raccoon in his newest book, A Color Game for Chester Raccoon.

I have shared all of these books with my students, who truly love the character. Even older kids who look at the books have fond memories of his stories. I will be detailing the books more closely in some upcoming posts, based on galleys I have received from NetGalley as a reviewer. Until then, feel free to click on any book cover for more information!

Stop It!

Stop It! by Sally O. Lee is about a bully. His name is George. George likes to pick on his big sister Anabel by stealing her dress-up clothes and harassing her cat. The day that George picks up Lulubell the cat by her tail, Anabel has had enough and screams, "STOP IT!" She tenderly picks up her beloved cat, loves her and caresses her. George is shocked and returns Anabel's princess wand to her, as an apology. Anabel accepts George's apology, anoints him as king, and he never bullies her again.

I love the illustrations in this book. Sally O. Lee has created her own watercolor paintings. They remind me a lot of those in Kevin Henkes' books.

As for the story, I think that it will speak to really young children. In some respects, I feel that calling George a bully for picking on his sister is a little extreme, as that is just being a stinky little brother. But hurting an animal is definitely not okay, and I believe this part is what truly makes him a bully.

I like that Anabel stands up for herself and her cat, quickly regaining composure after her explosion. She demonstrates love and compassion by taking care of her cat, giving little to no attention to George's antics, other than to distract him from hurting her cat. And I like how she quickly forgives him and boosts his self esteem by making him the king of the domain.

Young children are going to enjoy this book and probably relate to it. It also provides a great springboard for discussions, either within the home, or within the classroom, about bullying, being friends, and forgiveness.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for reviewing purposes.
