Review of A Surprising Friendship by Andrew Wald

A SURPRISING FRIENDSHIP, THE ENDEARING CHILDREN’S BOOK FROM AUTHOR AND THERAPIST ANDREW WALD, HELPS CHILDREN, ADULTS AND FAMILIES UNDERSTAND DIVERSITY AND THE IMPORTANCE OF UNIQUE AND ENDURING FRIENDSHIPS.

A Surprising Friendship is a heartwarming story of Zoey the Canadian goose and Henry the Black bear that celebrates diversity. Their fun and shared adventures show how differences can be overcome with kindness, acceptance, and a willingness to discover what we have in common with others who are not like us. A Surprising Friendship is a welcomed addition to any families’ reading list and library, with a wonderfully sweet and timely story by Wald, and beautiful watercolor illustrations by artist Tara J. Hannon.

Wald shares, “All beings are wired for connection. With an open heart, fear of others being different may be overcome and commonalities discovered and ultimately shared. As those friendships deepen over time, we feel fulfilled and alive. We want those feelings to endure. So, we yearn to maintain that relationship even if we have to be apart for a while. My wish is that this tale of Zoey and Henry encourages readers to welcome and enjoy a surprising friendship of their own, whatever the differences, obstacles, or distance.”

“…the moral here is charming…whimsical…appealing…the engaging work emphasizes its worthy message...” —Kirkus Reviews

“A Surprising Friendship is a delightful tale of two unexpected friends, a bear and a goose, who despite their obvious differences, overcome adversity and become best buddies. It celebrates and values real relationships and the challenges that come with them. Zoey and Henry are true role models for us all.”

**My thoughts**
It's a cute story about an unlikely friendship between a bear and a duck, showing that we can be friends with those who are different from ourselves and often find a lot in common with each other after all. You also get a smidge of a science lesson as winter draws near and Bear is feeling the need to hibernate and Duck is feeling the pull of flying south for the winter. It would be a cute story to read toward the beginning of the school year, I think.

Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for providing me with a requested review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
